Checking Jaw Spread and Reach Together

Some jobs, particularly on transverse-mounted engines or tightly packaged suspension components, leave very little room for a large puller frame to fit around the part at all. In these situations, a smaller, lower-profile puller or one with a slimmer yoke design may be the only option that physically fits, even if a larger tool would otherwise be strong enough for the job. Test fit the tool dry, without applying any force, before you commit to a purchase or start the job, since discovering a clearance problem mid-repair is far more frustrating than catching it beforehand.
